MARTINSVILLE, Ind. - Jason Ray, a senior at Martinsville (Ind.) High School, has
signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Indiana University East starting
with the 2012-13 season.
Red Wolves coach Mark Hester announced the signing April 5.
Ray was an Indiana Basketball Coaches Association honorable mention Senior All-State
and honorable mention Academic All-State honoree. He averaged 15 points and 9
rebounds per game as a senior. He helped Martinsville to a 19-3 record and was
Mid-State Conference Player of the Year.
"We're really excited to have someone who is not only that caliber of a player but
also that caliber of a student in our program," Hester said.
"To find somebody that meets all the criteria we look for in a player and in a
student ... it's a good day for IU East as a university."
Ray was selected for the Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 60 Senior Boys’ Workout
earlier this month.
He won Martinsville's John R. Wooden Award for all-around excellence.
He becomes the tallest player currently in the IU East program.
"The size is nice, but what is really nice is he is a 6-8 player who fits into our
system," Hester said.
Jason is the son of Denise Ray and Michael Ray.
He plans to major in accounting.
"I chose IU East because I liked the campus and the guys," Ray said.
Ray joins Jeff Hopper of Cascade in IU East's 2012 men's basketball recruiting class.
IU East is an NAIA Division II program. The Red Wolves went 24-8 this past season
and advanced to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship for the
second consecutive year.
