Doc Elko's "Baseball Firsts"

March 30, 2015
By Brian Wujcik of Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association General Meeting Location

Welcome to Doc Elko's "BASEBALL'S FIRSTS."  Every couple of weeks, Doc will challenge you with his vast knowledge of baseball trivia.  Answer the question correctly and win a prize.  Doc's next question:

This month is a daily double:

What owner paid his players $300 to grow moustaches?  Name the team, owner, and the player who became famous for this.

What famous ballplayer and manager broke his ankle sliding into second base when Joe DiMaggio asked him to practice his sliding techniques?

E-mail Doc with your answer.  He'll tell you if you're right, and tell you what you've won.

Last month's question:

One of the worst promotions in MLB history took place on July 12, 1979.  Where was it, what was it called, and what did it cost to get into the game?

On July 12, 1979, the Chicago White Sox hosted "Disco Demolition Night" between games of a double header with the Detroit Tigers. Admission to the game was a disco record to be blown up by local radio DJ Steve Dahl.  The second game was cancelled due to fans rushing the field and the destruction done to the outfield grass from the burning of disco records.
