Hamilton Southeastern broke loose from a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third inning, four more in the fourth, and five in the decisive fifth April 6 as the host Royals won the first of their three games in HSE’s annual Royal Classic.
Junior Mitch Roman went 3 for 4 with a game-high three runs batted, senior Chris Irwin was 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and three runs scored, and Justin Striebel also was 3 for 4 as Southeastern rolled up 12 hits and had nine RBIs.
Junior Nathan Upchurch got the win, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) while walking just one and striking out five over four innings. Senior Evan Rice struck out two in a scoreless fifth for the Royals (4-1), who will host Perry Meridian April 6 before a Saturday tilt versus Northview.
