A new region, a familar opponent and a packed gym was more than enough motivation for Westside and Howard as they met in the DawgHaus, better known as Husky Gym.
Westside and Howard met in Region 2-AAA play Tuesday night in a key game that could decide who would be king or queen of the mountain. In the end, it was a split decision.
In the girls game, the Lady Huskies held a 1 point lead after the first 8 minutes of play before the Lady Seminoles outscored their host 54-23 in the final three stanzas to take a 67-37 Region 2AAA win in the season opener for Latavia Coleman's squad. Westside evened its record to 1-1. Destyni Thomas of Westside led all scorers with 19 points while teammate Toni Williams chipped in with 11. Howard (0-1/0-1) was paced by Taylor Thorpe with 17. Chelsea Stuckey added 13 for Howard.
The boys game was a battle from the opening tip to the end of the contest as Howard led 20-19 at the intermission before Westside chipped away at the lead and would eventually take the lead late in the fourth quarter before Devontae Tharpe nailed a key free throw thanks to a technical foul with 4.1 seconds to go in regulation. Dominique Gibson then hit one of two from the foul line with less than a second remaining in regulation to tie things up at 35-35, sending the contest into an extra period of play. In the extra period, the Huskies and Seminoles battled to the end before Gibson hit a layup with 0.3 seconds to give Howard a 42-40 win in overtime at home. Josh Sallette led all Husky scorers with 8 points before fouling out in regulation. Brandon Glover scored 7, while Gibson and P.J. Cummings each had 6 points. Westside, falling to 0-1 and 0-1 in Region 2AAA play, was led by Matthew Hamilton with 12.
Howard, who improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the region, travels to Dexter to take on West Laurens Friday evening. It's ladies first as the girls tip off at 7 and the boys get underway at around 8:30.
