Today, at Howard High School, a star Lady Husky felt her dreams at the end of her fingertips. The highly-touted Senior Center, Jamila Mayfield, committed to Georgia State University by signing her National Letter of Intent at 1:35 p.m.in the atrium.

With the support of her mother, Annie Mayfield, and her fellow Lady Huskies, Mayfield committed to be a Panther and will be residing in Atlanta, GA for at least the next 4 years of her life. She is heading into her final year of High School Basketball with the advantage of knowing where she’ll be attending college. “It makes me really confident, because I like to have a goal to look forward to and I know where I’m headed and the direction so I have to come out and work hard.” Mayfield said reassuringly.

She also believes that her commitment [to Georgia State University] will inspire her teammates to put their best work forward every practice, every game and every day. “As the only person right now signed, I can use that as a way to motivate and works towards a goal which is to go to college and play because we love the sport.”  She continued to praise her teammates by saying, “We have a lot of talent and we are considered the underdogs and we want to come out and show everyone that we work hard.”

As she does on the court, Mayfield is always looking ahead of her. She is always evaluating her next move and then her next course of action. “I plan to major in Physical Therapy, so I can be involved with the game even when I get too old to play.” Mayfield added that she’s interested in a professional career in Basketball if everything works out. “I would like to play oversees [after college] and see where that takes me.” She also believes her sport can have a positive impact on daily life. “[Basketball] is a therapeutic release and it’s something I’m good at and every day I want to be better and better so it motivates me.” Mayfield said.

Howard’s first home game is December 1st at 3:30 against county rival, Southwest.
