Hawks Football Opens 2011 Season

The Horizon Hawks open up their football season today, Friday September 2nd, visiting the 2A Kennedy Trojans of Mount Angel. The Hawks are coming off a 7-3 season and their first trip to the State playoffs, while Kennedy is coming off a 9-4 season where they made a deep run into the playoffs, winning two games before losing in the 2A semi-finals to Gold Beach.
The Hawks are hoping to continue the winning tradition in 2011. Thirteen players return from last year’s squad which had 14 seniors. Key returning playmakers include junior QB/LB Wyatt Houston, senior DB/RB/QB Ryan Sederstrom and junior WR/DB Zack Selland, while 4th year starting center Zach Nielsen and junior Dallas Davies will anchor the lines.
The “preseason” (non-league) portion of the Hawks schedule is against formidable competition from the 2A level, which will provide excellent preparation for the always tough WestValley League season. In addition to Friday’s game at Kennedy, Horizon will host Portland Christian on September 9th, and visit back-to-back 2A State champ Scio on September 16th.
The Portland Christian game promises to be memorable as the first home football game on the new field turf at the Horizon campus just four years ago! Thanks to the generosity of local donors and the coordination of Total Sports Development, a beautiful field turf has been installed this summer and is now ready for play. The field will be a blessing not only to Horizon Christian but to the local community, as the field will also be available for use of various local youth sports leagues. Contact Donna Crace at Total Sports development (503-816-4220) to get more information about scheduling field usage.
We’ll look forward to seeing you at the games!
