Horizon Christian SchoolsHORIZON CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PRESENTS "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF"
Horizon Christian High School Drama and Ensemble will present the iconic musical "Fiddler on the Roof," the school's first full-length production and musical, March 10 - 13 at Woodhaven Community Church (22240 SW Washington Street, Sherwood).
Out of a school of 135 students, close to fifty of them are involved in the production, whether on stage or backstage helping with lighting, costumes and production. In addition, several children's roles are played by students from Horizon Christian Elementary & Middle School.
According to director Jane Vandervelde, who came to Horizon Christian High School specifically to build the drama department, "Fiddler on the Roof" is a production which includes many strong character roles, offering lots of kids the opportunity to participate.
"You can't do Fiddler on the Roof without a talented Tevye, the lead character, and the school has one in senior Kale Kiaunis," Vandervelde said, along with Golde, the character's wife, played by sophomore Kate Schifferdecker of Sherwood.
She added that she is amazed that in Horizon Christian's drama department's second year, they can perform such an ambitious production. Previously, they had performed one-act plays.
"I am blown away by the talent these kids bring; they are truly well rounded and goal-oriented," Vandervelde said. She laughed that rehearsals have even been a bit challenging at times since many of the participants are also basketball players readying for the state championships.
