Bucs vs. Minor Tigers Football Series
By Wayne Wood
Although the series between the Bucs and the Tigers has taken a few breaks in recent years, it does remain one of the longest overall between the teams. The current Minor head coach (Randy Cook) is former Buc QB from the mid-1970's and its program has been in existence since 1920. The overall series is 31 wins for the Bucs and 14 for the Tigers.
The two began playing in the mid-1960's with the Bucs winning 6-0 in 1964 and 26-2 in 1965. The Tigers won 30-7 in 1966 & 21-7 in 1967. The Bucs won 14-0 in 1968. In 1969, the Bucs won 23-0 and again the same season 18-0 in the Dental Clinic Game at Legion Field. In 1970, the Tigers returned the favor winning 13-6 and again 21-14 in a return match at Legion Field.
The Bucs dominated the decade of the 1970's with wins. 14-13 in 1971, 43-12 in 1972, 14-10 in 1973, 14-6 in 1974, 15-6 in 1975, 35-7 in 1976, 21-0 in 1977, 13-12 in 1978 and 14-0 in 1979.
In 1980, the Tigers broke the streak with a 6-0 but the Bucs won 23-13 in 1981. The Tigers won 3 in a row: 10-0 in 1982, 31-10 in 1983 & 14-3 in 1984 before the Bucs won 20-10 in 1985. The Tigers won 26-7 in 1986 & the Bucs won 16-14 in 1987. In 1988, the Tigers won 21-6 during the regular season while the Bucs beat them 21-17 in a semi-final state playoff game. The Tigers won won 22-15 in 1989 and 19-11 in 1990.
The Bucs went on another winning streak winning 20-0 in 1991, 21-14 in 1992, 26-12 in 1993, 31-27 in 1994 & 28-14 in 1995. The Tigers won 28-19 in 1996 & 20-7 in 1997. The Bucs won 29-22 in 1998 & 50-19 in 1999.
Then from 2000-2005, the season series was discontinued because of region realignments although the two met twice in the 2nd round of the state playoffs with the Bucs winning 21-17 in 2002 and 38-3 in 2003. They resumed regular season play in 2006 with the Bucs winning 21-14 & 20-12 in 2007. The Bucs won 18-6 in the 2nd round of the 2008 state playoffs.
In the same region once again, the Bucs beat the Tigers 14-0 in 2012 going into the 2013 game. Perhaps the two might put together in the same region again consistently for what's been a great series. GO BUCS!
