Scholars Bowl wins the 2012 ASCA State Academic Championship
April 16, 2012By J Armstead of Hoover High School
From Coach Rutsky:
On Friday, April 13, the Hoover High Scholars Bowl Team competed in the annual Alabama Scholastic Competition Association state championship tournament at Jefferson State Community College. 24 teams reached this final round of the tournament, advancing from district to regionals, and then to Friday's event.
Hoover's squad entered the finals as the #1 seed, having gone undefeated through the district and regional stages, and won all five of their morning matches, including wins over ASFA, Huntsville, and Covenant Christian. Entering the playoffs as the second seed, they were matched again with ASFA in the first round of the playoffs, but pulled away in the second half of a tough match to win by over 100. The semifinal matchup with Grissom went a bit easier, with Hoover locking up the victory by question 5 of the final period. This set up a final matchup with Altamont, the number 1 seed in the playoffs, and a team that Hoover has faced multiple times this year--ironically, a repeat of this year's earlier JV state championship.
As in that earlier event, Hoover came out strong and dominated the match, winning the first of the "best of 3" series by 175 points. This differential, combined with the lateness of the hour and desire on the part of the Altamont team to get to the state Latin Convention on time, led them to conclude that they would not have much chance of winning the two remaining matches, and they chose to withdraw and cede us the championship.
I am also pleased to note that we did not have a single all-star on our team for this tournament. All of our players worked and contributed equally to make this happen.
Congratulations to the ASCA state champions:
Logan Tarbox, Captain
These players will travel to Huntsville next Saturday for the NAQT state championship, seeking to achieve what no other team from the state of Alabama has ever done--win BOTH the NAQT and ASCA titles AND the JV titles in a single year.
MEANWHILE, while the varsity was winning a state championship, our JV team went to Bevill State, where they played against a field of varsity teams from around the state in a warm-up for nationals. They appear to have been appropriately prepared, as they won the event with a 7-1 record, and defeated their opponent in the finals by an unheard-of 370-0 margin. A bagel in Scholars Bowl -- that is, a round where you hold your opponent scoreless -- is rare, but managing one in a tournament championship game is extraordinary. Congratulations to these players, who will be heading to Nationals as well:
CG Kendrick, JV Captain
Come see the team take on Hoover's best and brightest at the Celebrate Hoover Day event this May 5th--we'll be on the main stage at 2:30!
