Hoover High wins the Baptist Health Systems 2012 Buc Classic

The Varsity Bucs won the championship of the 2012 Baptist Health System Buccaneer Classic tonight with a 17-11 win over Spain Park, claiming their third win on the day. The Bucs (22-7) opened the day with a 6-1 quarterfinal win over Tuscaloosa County. Winning pitcher Matt Barnes threw a complete game while striking out 8 and only allowing 5 hits. Sam Gillikin & Michael Powers each had 2 hits to lead the offense. Game two saw the Bucs defeat Hillcrest 5-0 behind the shutout pitching of Jacob Whitehead. Over his 7 innings, he allowed only 5 hits while recording 7 strikeouts. Trace Turner & Billy Reed each had 2 hits and Michael Powers had a HUGE bases clearing double to break up a scoreless game.
The Championship game saw the Bucs outslug Spain Park. Hunter White threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings in middle relief to earn the win. The Bucs had 20 hits and Sam Gillikin, Michael Powers & Matt Barnes were each 4 for 4. Powers had 7 RBI. Patrick Conway was 3-5 including a long homer and Trace Turner was 2-4. The Bucs open area play on Tuesday March 27th at Oak Mountain. Game time is 6:30pm. GO BUCS!!!!
