IUPUI RELEASE

CARMEL, Ind. - The IUPUI women's cross country team showcased its impressive depth en route to capturing the program's third-ever meet win, taking the Butler Opener on Saturday (Aug. 30) at Northview Church on the city's Northside. The Jaguars put five runners among the top 10 finishers, led by junior Leah Brooks and sophomore Valeria Guzman to edge host Butler by nine points.

IUPUI closed with 33 points while Butler, running just six individuals, finished with 42 points. Ball State (61 points) and Marian (99) rounded out the four-team field.

Butler's Laura Riches and Maddie Westerhoff took the top two spots, before a slew of Jaguars came across the line, paced by Brooks at 19:05.3. She and Guzman worked together throughout the race with Guzman finishing fifth at 19:23.0.

"We've had a couple girls up there in practice, but we didn't know how it was going to pan out," Brooks said. "I wasn't surprised Val was up there. She kind of took it out, so that was really nice. We were together about 3K and working together and Abby was up there too.

"I think that'll continue to change as the season goes on. You know you have a good team when people are switching places and encouraging each other."

Junior Julie Riggins was seventh of 44 runners at 19:31.4 and freshman Abby Horn was alongside at 19:34.6. Senior Jordan Hanaway, coming off a Second Team All-Summit League finish in cross country a season ago, was tenth at 19:37.1.

Even beyond the top five, Jaguars continued to stream across the finish line as Kelsey Tyler was 11th at 19:43.2 and classmate Zoey Johnson was 13th at 19:47.2. Mindy Whidden, Jennifer Emery and Meghan McCann also finished among the top 20.

IUPUI was without sophomore Savannah Turner, who sat out for precautionary reasons.

The Jaguars will run the Crusader Open at Valparaiso on Sept. 5.
