EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women's soccer team posted its second shutout of the season Friday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium, as the Purple Aces defeated visiting Bowling Green, 2-0, behind goals from Tatiana Pagan and Nicki Baham.
Evansville (2-1-0) controlled possession for much of the match, outshooting Bowling Green (0-3-0), 21-10, and putting nine shots on goal to the Falcons' two.
Pagan scored her first goal of the year in the 11th minute to put the Aces in front, 1-0, after UE earned a corner kick following a shot by junior Abby Springer that deflected off of a BGSU defender. Sophomore Emily Richardson played a short service to Pagan, who was unmarked just outside the left corner of the box and sent a low, driving shot to the far post that skipped past the Bowling Green goalkeeper.
Evansville would continue to pepper the Falcon goal with shots for the remainder of the half and outshot BGSU, 9-2, in the opening stanza, but could not put another ball in the back of the net and held a 1-0 advantage at the half.
The Aces would add an insurance goal in the 64th, when Baham recorded the first goal of her collegiate career. Sophomore Noor Medlej started the opportunity with a through ball to freshman Montana Portenier, who dribbled into the box and attempted a shot from 10 yards that was saved by goalkeeper Lauren Cadel. However, Cadel could not control the rebound, as the ball deflected high into the air and was headed into an empty net by Baham.
Bowling Green pushed forward late in the contest, creating a pair of scoring chances, but both were turned away by UE goalkeeper Simone Busby, who tallied a pair of saves in her 81 minutes in goal. Sophomore Whitney Biggs completed the shutout for Evansville, playing the final nine minutes between the posts.
Junior Kayla Smith led the Aces with a game-high six shots, putting two on goal. Four different Falcons attempted two shots apiece and Cadel finished the night with six saves.
UE will conclude its season-opening four-game home stand Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., when it hosts Eastern Kentucky at McCutchan Stadium.
