BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A handful of miscues ultimately led to the IUPUI men's soccer team's demise as the Jaguars opened play with a 2-0 loss at Bowling Green on Friday (Aug. 29) night. The host Falcons got goals in the 27th and 61st minutes, while holding the Jaguars scoreless in the win.
Pat Flynn put BGSU (1-0) in front off assists from Ryan James and Max Auden midway through the first half, beating IUPUI (0-1) goalie Eduardo Cortes with a shot to the lower left corner of the net.
Later, Cortes had a giveaway in the defensive third, leading to Danny Baraldi's unassisted goal, which all but ended the Jaguars' thoughts of a comeback.
The Jaguars were limited to just three first half shot attempts, including strikes on frame from freshman Ryan Olans and junior Clint Hoffar. The offense showed a little more flair after falling behind by two goals, including a pair of attempts from Jacob Singer in the 72nd minute, both of which required saves from BGSU goalie Nick Landsberger. Later, Landsberger received an assist from his defense when an Emmanuel Usen attempt that was cleared off the back line by one of his teammates in the game's 80th minute.
Landsberger made five stops to earn the shutout while Cortes was credited with seven saves in more than 62 minutes of action. Sophomore Christian Lomeli played the final 27-plus scoreless minutes in goal.
Junior Lance Davis paced the IUPUI attack with three shots while Usen and Singer both had two attempts.
The Jaguars will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 3 when they face crosstown rival Butler at the Butler Bowl at 7:00 p.m..
