INDIANA COACH KEVIN WILSON TALKS DEFENSE

The Hoosiers wrapped up their fourth practice on Friday getting ready for a two-a-day on Saturday.

Coach Wilson addressed the media following practice and says they are making strides on defense:

QUESTION: How have things come along on defense?

“We tried to move along in a pretty good rate actually letting our old guys go in because we’ve got young first-year players we like and sometimes you try to get them a lot of work during practice and that prolongs practice so we try to get through a normal practice for reps we need for our ones and twos.

We’ve made what looks to be a lot of progress but the key is going to be how consistent we can be like last year when we had some strong defensive performances. We haven’t been very consistent and we want to start that in practice. So were looking for some consistency and for some competitiveness in practice. We want our players to come ready for practice.

We haven’t had a ton of hitting yet, tomorrow is the first full padded day, with a two a day on Saturday and will give them Sunday off and will really get into it next week.

QUESTION: you are talking about some of the young guys making a contribution, is it too early to tell who some of those players might be?

COACH WILSON: Yeah because we haven’t done a lot hitting and some of those guys look really good running around but when it comes time to hit you don’t see them as confident physically just because some guys are more comfortable in the physical aspect of the game then others. We haven’t had a lot of opportunities because we kept our young guys to 5 to 6 individual hitting and some seven on seven play and some team play so you can collectively look at the O and D guys without wearing out our old guys because they’re still at their waiting for the young players to get it over with. We picked up our practice pace today after going significantly long yesterday but the young guys work came at the end. I think that will help our old guys stay physical and a good mindset and won’t get burned out even though we have to be tough in two-a-days and we don’t want to grind it out. Where about a week and a half to two weeks from knowing which players may be redshirted or not.
