INDIANA STATE PRESS RELEASE
TERRE HAUTE, IND. – The Indiana State Sycamores will play three early season tournaments including one at home before jumping into the Missouri Valley Conference schedule in their quest to return to the postseason for the first time since 2011.
“This year's schedule will be a great test for the team,” Traci Dahl-Skinner, Indiana State volleyball coach, said. “We have a solid core of returners and the incoming players are going to contribute immediately.”
Indiana State finished 13-17 in 2013 and lost three starters to graduation but return a solid core of veterans to go along with a 2014 recruiting class that was recognized by PrepVolleyball.com as one of the best in the country.
The season will begin on the home court as the Sycamores host Akron, Chicago State, North Carolina A&T, and Wright State for a two-day tournament on August 29 and 30. Indiana State will then travel to Pittsburgh, Penn., where they will compete against Duquesne, Robert Morris, and Youngstown State September 5 and 6.
“We will be tested early on with teams in the preseason tournaments,” Dahl-Skinner said. “This will get us ready for conference play.”
The Sycamores take a break from tournament action to visit IUPUI in Indianapolis on Sept. 9 and then cap the pre-conference portion of their schedule at the SIU Edwardsville Cougar Classic (Sept. 12-14) where they will go up against Southern Utah, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and SIUE.
The 2014 Missouri Valley Conference campaign will begin on the road for Indiana State and close on the home court. The Sycamores will open conference play on Sept. 12 at Missouri State and Sept. 20 at Wichita State. The same two opponents will close the regular season as they visit the ISU Arena on Nov. 21 (Wichita State) and Nov. 22 (Missouri State).
Indiana State will be on the road for nearly a month between their season opening tournament and their first non-tournament home game. After taking on North Carolina A&T in their final game of the Indiana State Tournament on Aug. 30, the Sycamores will be on the road competing until Sept. 26 when they kick off the home portion of the MVC schedule against Evansville.
The Sycamores will also host Southern Illinois (Sept. 27), Illinois State (Oct. 3), Drake (Oct. 17), Northern Iowa (Oct. 18), Bradley (Nov. 7), and Loyola (Nov. 8) before closing the regular season against Wichita State (Nov. 21) and Missouri State (Nov. 22).
