IHSAA PRESS RELEASE

In the second state championship game of the day at Ben Davis High School, South Spencer found a way to score in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 1-0 over Southmont in a game dominated by pitching. It was the first softball state championship in school history, after falling short in appearances in 1999 and 2008.

After six and a half innings of scoreless softball, senior Chandra Schroeder led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left center for South Spencer. Two batters later, freshman Hannah Epperson delivered the game winning hit just beyond the reach of a diving centerfielder, driving in Schroeder who was met at home plate by a mob of teammates.

The Rebels were led by an overpowering pitching performance from junior Kaylea Horn (13-2) who threw a two-hitter and struck out 11 Southmont batters. McKenzi Jordan (19-9) scattered six hits and struck out eight for the Mounties.

Head coach Tara Compton’s South Spencer squad finished on an 18-game winning streak and a record of 27-5. It adds to the school's hardware on the diamond joining three baseball titles over the last eight years. First year head coach Britney Carpenter led Southmont (23-9) to its first state finals appearance.

South Spencer’s Chandra Schroeder Wins 2A Mental Attitude Award
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Chandra Schroeder of South Spencer High School as the winner of this year’s Mental Attitude Award in Class 2A Softball.

A three-year starter, Schroeder has played shortstop, first base, and roamed the outfield in her career for the Rebels. The multi-sport athlete has three years of varsity experience on the basketball court, and earned Pocket Athletic Conference honors for her achievements on the golf course.

Schroeder has volunteered with the school’s Red Cross Blood Drive, and has been involved in the cadet teaching program within the South Spencer School Corporation.

She is the daughter of Mike Schroeder and Stephanie Schroeder-Brown of Richland.

The IHSAA Executive Committee presented a $1,000 scholarship to South Spencer High School in the name of Chandra Schroeder.
