Next Wednesday’s affair against Dayton will mark Indy Eleven’s first-ever appearance in the U.S. Open Cup, the national championship tournament of American soccer. Played annually since 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is a single elimination tournament open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States.
This year’s winner will earn $250,000, have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy (one of the oldest nationally contested trophies in American team sports) and earn a berth into the 2015/16 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League. The team that advances the furthest from each lower division will ear a $15,000 cash prize.
U.S. Soccer is broadcasting one match during each round of this year’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the 101st edition of the tournament, which features a record 80 teams. Earlier in the event, ussoccer.com covered PDL side Western Mass. Pioneers’ 4-1 victory against Mass Premier Soccer (USASA) on May 7. That was followed by a Richmond, Virginia, derby in which USL PRO’s Richmond Kickers earned a 6-1 win against the NPSL’s RVA FC – the previous home club of Indy Eleven midfielder Don Smart – on May 14.
