INDIANA FEVER RELEASE
Date: Friday, May 23
Television - None
The Indiana Fever began the season with a pair of hotly-contested games on back-to-back nights. Now, after nearly a week off, Indiana returns to the hardwood on Friday night to host the Washington Mystics.
Both teams will be looking for their first win of the season. The Fever led most of the way in their season opener in Chicago and took Atlanta to double-overtime one night later, but ultimately came up short both nights. The Mystics fell to the defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx 89-77 last Friday in their lone game so far this season.
Despite the early losses, Fever fans have to be pleased with the performance of top draft pick Natasha Howard. With Tamika Catchings sidelined by a back injury, Howard started her first two WNBA games and lit up the box score. The 6-foot-3 forward out of Florida State led the Fever in scoring in both games and put up averages of 18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.5 steals, and 4.0 blocks.
Meanwhile, Catchings' status for this weekend remains up in the air, as does the availability of second-year guard Layshia Clarendon, who missed the first two games of the season with a concussion.
Washington is led by point guard Ivory Latta, who was a first-time All-Star last season. Latta was sensational in her regular season debut, hitting 7-of-9 3-pointers and totaling 25 points and five assists against Minnesota. Latta's matchup with Fever point guard Briann January, a two-time selection to the WNBA's All-Defensive Team, will be one to watch.
