Baseball to End Non-Conference Schedule at Eastern Illinois

May 13, 2014

Projected Starters:
RHP Kyle Kramp vs. RHP Jake Haberer

INDIANAPOLIS – The final non-conference game of the season is up next on the Butler baseball schedule as the Bulldogs head into the final week of the regular season with a road trip to Eastern Illinois. The game against the Panthers will prepare the 'Dogs for a three-game series at Villanova this weekend.

A Look at Butler (18-29)
The Bulldogs will look for their second-straight victory when they travel to Charleston, Ill. on Tuesday afternoon to take on Eastern Illinois. After dropping the first two games of the Georgetown series at Bulldog Park, Butler came back with a 7-6 win vs. the Hoyas on Sunday moving their overall record to 18-29.

Four players have over 40 hits on the season for Butler giving the Bulldogs an interesting dynamic as multiple student-athletes can come up to the plate and deliver a clutch hit when it counts the most. The most reliable player on the roster this season has been centerfielder Marcos Calderon. The senior has started in all 47 games and he leads the team with a .310 batting average. He has a team-high 54 hits on the year including nine doubles, a triple and a team-high three home runs.

Additional Bulldogs to keep an eye on in the lineup includes Chris Maranto and Quincy Quintero. Maranto joins Calderon in the lineup as a student-athlete that holds a batting average over .300. He is second on the team in RBIs with 20 and in total bases with 57.

Quintero has lifted his batting average to .263 in recent weeks. An every day starter in the designated hitter role, Quintero leads the team with 10 doubles and is third on the club with 17 RBIs.

Kyle Kramp will get the start for Butler on Tuesday, yet the Bulldogs will probably use the contest as a staff day. Kramp has made four starts on the year, but has graced the rubber eight total times. He has 22 strikeouts in his 22.1 innings of work, but is still searching for his first win of the season.

Scouting Eastern Illinois (18-31-1)
The Panthers have the same number of wins as the Bulldogs as they enter Tuesday's matchup with an 18-31-1 overall record. Caleb Howell has put together an outstanding season with 84 hits during his junior campaign. Howell posts a .422 batting average and also leads the team in runs scored with 47. The speedster has a team-high eight stolen bases on the year to go with nine extra-base hits.

Howell is one of four players Butler will have to game plan for as Demetre Taylor, Mitch Gasbarro and Tyler Schweigert all impact games on a regular basis. Taylor has been an offensive juggernaut in the batting order with a team-high 15 doubles, five triples and six home runs. He leads the team in each category while maintaining a .323 average.

Gasbarro gives the Panthers another heavy bat in the lineup as he comes into the contest with 12 doubles and two home runs. Schweigert is yet another Panther hitting over .300 on the year. The senior has six doubles and three round trippers.

Jake Haberer will start on the mound for Eastern Illinois. Much like Butler and starting pitcher Kyle Kramp the Panthers will use Haberer for a select few innings and have multiple arms from the pitching staff get some work. Haberer is currently 0-2 on the year with a 7.56 ERA. He has 19 strikeouts in 25 total innings and is posting a .293 batters-against average.
