NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Clemson starting pitcher Daniel Gossett improved his season
record to 7-0 as he threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout in an 8-0 Tiger victory
over the University of Notre Dame baseball team Saturday afternoon at Frank Eck
Stadium.
Gossett was locked in from the start as he struck out 11 Irish batters and allowed
just four hits and a walk in 119 pitches to lower his ERA to 1.57.
The Irish struggled all day at the plate as they tallied only one extra-base hit and
left five runners on. Freshman Cavan Biggio tallied a single and a double, while
fellow freshmen Kyle Fiala and Ryan Lidge each knocked a single.
Clemson plated three runs in the third, two in the fifth and three in the eighth to
pull ahead in the game. The big inning for the Tigers proved to be in the third as
they scored three runs with two outs in the inning. With the bases loaded, starting
pitcher Michael Hearne (4-6) appeared to be out of the jam as he induced a ground
out towards third base. However, a fielding error followed by a throwing error by
junior Kevin DeFilippis allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate in one play.
An RBI double from Tyler Slaton and a RBI single from Tyler Krieger plated two runs
in the fifth and upped the score to 5-0.
Three more runs in the 8th finished off the scoring for the Tigers.
The Irish used five arms in the contest as relievers Ryan Smoyer (2.0 IP, 1 H),
Scott Tully (0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER), Cristian Torres (1.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB)
and Nick McCarty (0.2 IP, 0 H) combined to go four innings in relief of Hearne (5.0
IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO).
Notre Dame (18-31, 5-21 ACC) and No. 22 Clemson (31-20, 13-12 ACC) are tied at
one-game apiece in their best-of-three set and will settle the series at 12:05 p.m.
Sunday. Fans can watch the game on WatchND's video broadcast with Chuck Freeby on
the call or follow gametracker. Tickets are still available for Saturday's game.
Adult tickets are $5 while youth and senior tickets are $3. Notre Dame students,
faculty and staff are admitted free with a Notre Dame ID.
