INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI Athletics Department and Head Basketball Coach Jason Gardner announced the signing of Darell Combs (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) to an institutional grant in aid with the intent of joining the Jaguars, beginning in the fall. Combs, a 6-foot-2 guard, played last season at Eastern Michigan and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Combs appeared in 36 games and made six starts for the Eagles a year ago, averaging 7.5 points and 1.4 assists per game, while hitting 32.7 percent from three-point range. Combs scored in double-digits 12 times, including a season-high 23 point outburst at Kentucky on Nov. 27. He later tallied 21 points at Western Michigan on Feb. 23 in Mid-American Conference play.
Combs began his college career at Blinn (Tex.) College, where he averaged a team-high 16.8 points per game while hitting 44.1 percent from the field. In addition, he averaged 3.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game from the backcourt. Combs was an All-District and All-Region player while at Thornwood High School in South Holland, Ill..
"We're excited to be adding Darell to the program," Gardner said. "He's a guy that can really score the basketball and will fill a need for us moving forward. Everyone speaks very highly of Darell in terms of his work ethic and what he'll bring to our program.
"He's going to make us immediately better in practice next season. Also, as a staff, we've talked about getting into Chicago and recruiting that area hard. He played at a high level against tough competition in Chicago at Thornwood."
Combs becomes IUPUI's second Division I transfer to sign since Gardner took over as head coach, joining Leo Svete (Western Michigan).
