CARBONDALE, Ill.—The Indiana State softball team broke its fourth school record of the season, this time in total bases, as the Sycamores defeated the Salukis 4-3 in the first game of the doubleheader before falling 6-2 in the second game of the day.
The Sycamores got off to a quick start when senior Morgan Allee led off the top of the first inning with a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior Aubre Carpenter. After a flyout, senior Shelby Wilson was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with two outs. Junior Megan Stone then put the Sycamores up with a three-run home run to left center field to give the Sycamores 3-0 lead.
The Salukis answered back in the bottom of the first as Southern Illinois scored one run off two hits to cut the Sycamore lead to 3-1.
Both teams had opportunities but neither team was able to break onto the scoreboard again until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Salukis scored two runs off two hits to tie the game 3-3.
The Sycamores then answered right back in the top of the sixth when Wilson reached on an error to lead off the inning and advanced to second. After a blooper single by Stone to put runners at first and second, both runners advanced one base on a sacrifice by freshman Brooke Riemenschneider. After a failed squueze attempt, Yvette Alvarez reached on a drop fly ball by the right fielder to score Stone and give the Sycamores a 4-3 lead.
The Sycamore defense then held on to win the first game by a score of 4-3.
Alvarez pitched five innings earning the win while sophomore Taylor Lockwood pitched two innings to earn the save while Stone hit a three-run home run.
In the second game of the day, the Sycamores again jumped out to an early lead when Allee led off the game with a double to left field before scoring two batters later when freshman Erika Crissman reached on an error to give the Sycamores a 1-0 lead.
The Salukis came back in the bottom of the second when they scored three runs off two hits to take a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Sycamores cut into the Southern Illinois lead when Stone doubled to lead off the inning before advancing to third on a sacrifice by Wilson. Stone then scored on an RBI groundout by Riemenschneider to cut the Saluki lead to 3-2.
The Sycamores could get no closer, however, as the Salukis added runs in the fifth and sixth to win game two, 6-2.
In the split, the Sycamores broke the school record for total bases which makes the fourth team record broken this season.
The rubber match between the two teams will take place at 1 p.m. EST on Sunday with a trip to MVC tournament on the line for the Sycamores who will be looking to make the tournament for the first time since 2009. The team will also be looking for their first winning season since 1992.
