CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Evansville softball team split the Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday with the Loyola Ramblers.
Evansville won the first game in Chicago by a score of 2-1 and the Ramblers came away with the 9-1 victory in five innings in game two.
UE is now 18-29 on the season and 6-16 in Valley play, while the Ramblers improved to 20-28 and 9-13 in conference play.
The first game in Chicago was a close one, neither the Aces or the Ramblers were able to pull away and any point and this game would not be decided until the bottom of the seventh.
Evansville went with its Ace, Megan Gurski, in the circle and Gurski started the game out throwing two scoreless innings.
UE was unable to score in the first three innings and the Ramblers got on the board in the bottom of the third. An RBI single by senior Lauren Moore gave the home team the 1-0 lead.
Neither team would score in the fourth inning and in the top of the fifth the Purple Aces were able to tie the game. An RBI single by Emma Buckles would drive in Mariah Ferguson for the score and we'd be tied up heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Gurski and Brittany Gardner for Loyola kept both offenses off the board in the sixth and the game headed into the seventh inning, a 1-1 tie.
The top of the seventh saw junior Kayla Fortner get her first hit of the day and it was a big one. Fortner hit an RBI single to left field that drove in Michal Luckett, giving UE the 2-1 lead and the win.
Gurski (9-12) got the win for Evansville, as the junior threw 7.0 innings, striking out two and allowing only one run on five hits.
Game two of the MVC doubleheader started out really well for the visiting Purple Aces, as Evansville scored in the top of the first. UE scored on a bases-loaded RBI walk by Victoria Dellorto that brought in freshman Chandra Parr, giving Evansville the early 1-0 lead.
UE started freshman Briana Combs in the circle and the right-hander had a tough outing. Combs gave up three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Loyola took the 3-1 lead. The Ramblers scored on an error by Michal Luckett that allowed a runner to score, a fielder's choice RBI and an RBI single.
The Aces didn't score any runs in the top of the second and Loyola struck again in the bottom of the inning. The Ramblers added five more runs in the second on a two run RBI single, a score on a passed ball and a two run RBI double. Evansville subbed in senior Emily Morris for Combs and Morris finished the inning out for UE.
Combs (4-5) finished the day for Evansville allowing eight runs, with only five of them being earned, on eight hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Morris and Ashley Rogers for Loyola kept both offenses scoreless in the third and fourth innings and we'd head to the top of the fifth.
The Purple Aces couldn't cut into the Ramblers lead in the top of the fifth inning and Morris gave up a homerun in the bottom of the fifth, leading to the 9-1 run rule victory for Loyola.
After splitting day one of the weekend series with Loyola, the Purple Aces will play again tomorrow at noon in the series finale against the Ramblers.
