Women's Tennis Advances to Sixth Straight League Title Match

DENVER - For the sixth time in the past six seasons, the IPFW women's tennis team will be playing for the Summit League Tournament title, as the squad toppled the South Dakota State 4-1, setting up a Championship Math face-off with the Denver Pioneers.
With the win, IPFW improves to 18-9 on the season, while South Dakota State falls to 18-8.
The long match - taking over four and a half hours - opened with the Mastodons taking the doubles point, starting with an 8-2 win by Mayu Sato and Marcy Huck at No. 1. The Jackrabbits fought back with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles over the IPFW tandem of Miloslava Shustova and Emily Richardson. IPFW would not be tied for long, as an 8-6 win by Carlota Trevino and Ella Norgren at No. 3 gave the Mastodons the doubles point.
Sato, the 2014 Summit League Player of the Year, made quick work of her opponent at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1, giving IPFW a 2-0 advantage. SDSU took their first singles win of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ella Norgren at No. 3. Trevino picked up a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6, as Huck ended the match with a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win at No. 5, sending the Mastodons to the championship match.
When the match ended, the Mastodons were leading at No. 2 singles, as Shustova held a 6-7, 6-4, 2-1 lead, while Sofia Sorokina was serving in the second set trailing 6-5 after a 6-4 first-set vicotry against her opponent at No. 4.
The Mastodons will face off against tournament host Denver in a noon ET first serve for a right to go to the NCAA Tournament.
