Leske Named AVCA Second Team All-American

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State men’s volleyball red-shirt senior middle attacker Matt Leske has been named to the 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Second Team as announcec by the AVCA today.

A runner-up for the “Off the Block” Blocker of the Year award and All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) First Team honoree, Leske is the first Ball State men’s volleyball player to earn AVCA All-America honors since the 2011 season when Anders Nelson was named to the AVCA All-America Second Team.

Leske finished the 2014 campaign with the best blocking average in the nation at 1.60 blocks per set. He tallied 22 solo blocks and 143 assisted blocks on the season for a total of 165 blocks. His effort at the net helped the Cardinals lead the MIVA in blocking this season with a 3.00 average – Ball State finished the second ranked second in the nation in that category. Offensively, Leske finished 2014 with 176 kills and a .386 attack percentage.

The red-shirt senior saw time in 107 sets this season and posted career-highs in kills (14), digs (6) and tied a career-best in blocks (12). Leske notched a double-double against Lewis on Mar. 29 with 12 kills and 12 blocks.

Leske finished his Ball State career ranked ninth in program history with 431 total blocks and sixth in career assisted blocks with 373. For his career, Leske hit a 1.44 blocks per set average to sit in sixth place in the school record books.

Since men’s volleyball became a varsity sport at Ball State during the 1964 season, a total of 27 student-athletes have combined to earn 44 All-America honors for the program. In addition, Jim East was a second team All-America selection for the Ball State club team in 1962.
