MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men’s golf team sits in second place through two rounds of the Earl Yestingsmeier Memorial Invitational.
The tournament, named in honor of longtime Ball State coach Earl Yestingsmeier, got underway with two rounds Monday at Delaware Country Club.
Ball State owns a team total of 730 (368-362). Each of the 11 teams in the field has six golfers competing with the best five scores counting, as opposed to the usual five-count-four format.
The Cardinals trail first-place Toledo by four shots with one round to play. Bethel (Ind.) College is third at 743, trailing Ball State by 13 strokes for second. The final 18 holes begin Tuesday with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, and live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
“Playing with a different lineup and a different format, we did a good job today,” Ball State head coach Mike Fleck said. “We got good production out of Albert and Tyler. Derek (Kundenreich) and Zach (Yinger) did their part. We kind of rallied at the end of the day, which gives us a chance to play for a little more tomorrow.”
Otto Black of Toledo is the only player under par through two rounds and owns a seven-stroke lead at 6 under. Vince Drahman of Marian (Ind.) is second at even par, two strokes ahead of Jennings and Ostrom in the field of 77 golfers.
Yinger (75-71) and Kundenreich (75-71) are also in the top 10 for Ball State. The pair is tied for ninth at 6-over 146. Quentyn Carpenter is tied for 37th at 156 (77-79), while Connor O’Neal rounds out the Ball State lineup in a tie for 46th at 158 (81-77).
The Cardinals’ home tournament has been named in honor of Yestingsmeier since 2001-02, but this is the first year it has been a memorial event. Yestingsmeier, who passed away in January at age 80, spent 36 seasons leading the program before retiring in 1998. He guided the Cardinals to 107 tournament titles and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.
