EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville Purple Aces softball team went 1-1 this afternoon against Drake University at Cooper Stadium.
Evansville (16-22, 4-9 MVC) won game one of the doubleheader against Drake (12-24, 4-7 MVC) by a score of 8-2, then lost game two, 4-2.
Coach Mark Redburn felt good about how his team played:
"I thought we did a really good job in the first game, the long-ball really helped us out there, as we scored six runs off of three homeruns, and then we got a couple of other runs off of some strong deep shots, as the first game was very competitive between the two teams."
"In game two, we had some chances that we couldn't capitalize on, we hit too many runs in the in-field and we just couldn't get our long ball going. We had runners in scoring position but couldn't get them in and that really held us down. Megan, Briana and Annie did really well for us in the circle today and did everything I asked of them, our offense just wasn't clicking in game two. We're looking forward to tomorrow though and hopefully we can get the series victory."
The first game of the doubleheader on this beautiful Saturday afternoon saw the Purple Aces put on an offensive display.
Annie Moore started in the circle for Evansville and after a scoreless first inning for both squads, Drake took the early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Rebekah Schmidt in the top of the second.
Evansville didn't put any runs on the board in the bottom half of the second and the Bulldogs would score one more run in the top of the third on a single homer by the shortstop Amy Pierce. After the Pierce homer, UE brought in Megan Gurski (8-11) to close out the inning.
The Aces were able to tie the game in the bottom of the third with a two run homerun by Kayla Fortner and after Gurski kept the Bulldogs scoreless in the top of the fourth, Evansville scored on a monster homerun by Chandra Parr in the bottom of the inning, to give the Aces the 3-2 lead and Parr wouldn't be done.
Drake was kept scoreless in the top of the fifth inning and the freshman Parr hit another homerun in the bottom half of the inning that drove in three more runs for the Aces, giving them the 6-2 lead.
Evansville scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Victoria Dellorto hit an RBI triple and an RBI single by Emma Buckles would give the Purple Aces the 8-2 lead and ultimately the win.
Gurski received the win for the Purple Aces, throwing 5.0 innings, striking out three and allowing only one hit.
Evansville started Briana Combs in the circle and the freshman kept the Bulldogs off the board for two innings, before the opposing team struck.
The Bulldogs Cortney Wood hit a two run RBI single to center field that gave the opposing team the 2-0 lead. UE brought in Megan Gurski to close out the inning and the junior from Saskatchewan kept the opposing team off the board.
Chandra Parr would strike again for the home squad in the bottom of the third, as the freshman hit a triple to right field to drive in two scores for the Aces and tie the game 2-2.
Gurski and Rebekah Schmidt for Drake kept both offenses in check for the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and the game headed into the final inning with a 2-2 tie.
Drake's Megan Sowa hit a bunt-single to drive in a score in the top the seventh and before the inning ended Laura Brewer hit a double to left field that drove in another score for the Bulldogs that gave the visiting squad the 4-2 win.
After the series split on Saturday, the Aces will look to get the series win tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., as they host the series finale at Cooper Stadium.
