INDY ELEVEN PRESS RELEASE
U.S. Soccer today announced that Indy Eleven forward Ben Spencer has been named to the 21-man U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team roster that will take part in the 35thedition of the Dallas Cup, which takes place April 13-20 in Dallas, Texas.
“It’s an honor to represent the United States at any event, but to do so with the Under-20 team at the Dallas Cup is something special,” said Spencer, who will leave Indianapolis to join the U.S. squad on Thursday. “I’ve played in the Dallas Cup as a youth player and watched the U-20’s play there before, so it’s rewarding to now get the opportunity to take part in the tournament with this group.”
Due to the 10-day trip with the U.S. Under-20’s, Spencer will miss Indy Eleven’s first two matches in North American Soccer League play – this Saturday’s Inaugural Game against the Carolina RailHawks and next Saturday’s affair against the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, both taking place at Michael A. Carroll Stadium at IUPUI. Both games kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised live on Indy Eleven’s official broadcast partner, MyINDY TV-23.
The U.S. is in Bracket C of the Dallas Cup’s Gordon Jago Super Group along with U-19 sides from Eintracht Frankfurt of Germany, River Plate of Argentina and UANL Tigres of Mexico.
“This is a great chance for Ben to work towards making the group that will be a part of the U-20 World Cup Qualifying tournament next spring,” said Indy Eleven Assistant Coach Tim Regan, who was a member of U-20 MNT Head Coach Tab Ramos’ staff at the team’s last camp in January. “The Dallas Cup is always stocked with high-level teams featuring some of the most talented players in the world at that age level. Getting games against quality competition is the best way for young players to develop so we are thrilled that Ben has been afforded this opportunity.”
Making its fifth all-time appearance at the competition and first since 2010, the U-20 MNT’s first match will be the marquee game of the opening day of the tournament. Following a pair of Super Group matches and the Welcome World Opening Ceremonies, the U.S. will play River Plate at 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT in the Cotton Bowl on Sunday, April 13. The U.S. then plays its second match less than 24 hours later against Eintracht Frankfurt on the campus of Richland College at 5:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. CT.
The U.S. concludes Bracket C play against UANL Tigres on Wednesday, April 16. The location and time of the match will be determined by results in the first two rounds across Super Group Brackets A, B and C with the purpose being to hold the two most potentially dramatic games of bracket play in the Cotton Bowl.
The next event for the U.S. U-20 MNT after the Dallas Cup will be a domestic training camp held at North Carolina State University in May.
