CHARLESTON, Ill. – Sophomore John Mascari set a new school record in the 5000 meter run, as the Sycamore men sit second with 61 points, while the women are tied for fourth with 16 points. Eastern Illinois leads the women’s team race with 35 points, while the Eastern Illinois men have 64 points.
Mascari ran a time of 14:18.37 for 5,000 meters to break Justin Kunz’s record of 14:22.43 from 2007. Mascari was followed by teammates Al Escalera and Tristan Selby for a 1-2-3 finish in the race. Escalera ran 14:40.46 and Selby ran 14:44.57.
“Our highlight of the day was John’s school record in the 5,000 meter run,” said Men’s Head Coach John McNichols. “He had a rabbit for a little under a mile, but after that (John) ran alone for over two miles in the cold and windy conditions. Al and Tristan ran great races as well.”

Freshman Alethia Marrero won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.89, while senior Amy Fanella was ninth in a time of 1:05.92.

Senior Kelly Steffen came into the day leading, but did not finish as she was doing the first day only to better prepare for the conference meet.
The competition will conclude Saturday, starting with the men’s javelin at 10:00 a.m. (CT) and ending with the men’s 4 x 400 meter relay at 5:50 p.m. (CT).
