INDIANAPOLIS – The Pirates were able to even the weekend series at 1-1 with a 7-3 victory over Butler on Saturday afternoon. Seton Hall scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to gain control of the game. Each run scored in the fourth came with two outs.
A throwing error in the first inning helped SHU push across the first run of the game. Butler would not trail for long however as the team generated two runs in the second inning off a sacrifice fly and a throwing error.
The decisive fourth inning decided the outcome on Saturday as Seton Hall scored four runs off four hits. The damage actually could have been even worse as SHU left three runners on base to end the inning. A late two-out rally began with DJ Ruhlman hitting a two-RBI single back up the middle of the field. Sal Annunziata followed in the lineup with an RBI single to center and the final run of the inning came off a Kyle Grimm single through the right side of the infield.
The SHU lead expanded with a solo run in the sixth. Butler returned the favor with a single run in the eighth off an RBI single from Marco Caponi. The final run of the game crossed the plate in the top of the ninth for Seton Hall. Tyler Boyd singled to right field allowing Chris Selden to score.
Saturday's contest only featured two extra base hits as Quincy Quintero of Butler and Annunziata of SHU each recorded a double. The pitching battle went to Seton Hall as BU arms gave up 14 hits compared to just six from the SHU staff. Quintero was the player of the game for Butler going 2-for-4 from the plate. Second baseman Chris Maranto also recorded two hits.
The win on the mound went to Conor Krauss, his first of the season. Jeff Schank was nailed with the loss, moving his overall record to 1-2. The weekend series will be decided in game three tomorrow. First pitch is slated for Noon.
