INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler baseball team earned an impressive 6-1 win over Seton Hall on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs scored early and often to build a lead and Gunner Johnson would do the rest as he shut down the Pirate offense to help BU improve to 12-16 this season.
Winning game one of this three game series was important for the Bulldogs as they became the first team to defeat the Pirates with Josh Prevost on the hill. Prevost moves to 7-1 on the year with the setback. The big righty did strike out nine batters in six innings of work, but the show on the mound belonged to Gunner Johnson who delivered a seven inning gutty performance to earn his second win of the season. Johnson struck out seven and only walked two as he put the 'Dogs in a great position to win on Friday.
Kyle Allen also made an appearance for Butler on the mound. He tossed the final two innings to secure the win. During his outing, Allen recorded three strikeouts while limiting the Pirates to just three hits which generated one lone run.
Butler was led offensively by the hot bats of Will Amador and Nick Bartolone. Amador put the 'Dogs on the scoreboard with an RBI single to center field in the first that scored Marcos Calderon, but the highlight of the game came quickly after in the second as Bartolone sent a shot over the wall in right field to expand the lead.
A throwing error would push Butler's advantage to 3-0 and a wild pitch would add to the Seton Hall deficit as BU went up 4-0 after three full innings.
Two insurance runs would cross the plate in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Maranto hit an RBI single to right that sent Marco Caponi to the dish. Butler's final run would come off an Amador sac fly to left.
These two teams will return to the diamond tomorrow at 1 p.m.
