The Big Ten Conference has selected 17 Player and Pitcher of the Week honorees this season and six have gone to Hoosiers. That total is twice as many as any other league school. Iowa and Nebraska are second with three weekly awards apiece. Kyle Schwarber, Casey Rodrigue and Dustin DeMuth have been named Player of the Week while Joey DeNato and Kyle Hart(twice) were tabbed the conference's Pitcher of the Week.
Indiana's staff earned run average of 2.67 is not only best in the Big Ten, but leads by a large margin. The next clostest team ERA is nearly a half run back, Illinois' 3.07 clip. IU has four of the top-10 individual ERAs in the conference; represented by Scott Effross (2nd, 1.38), Joey DeNato (6th, 2.22), Christian Morris (7th, 2.23) and Kyle Hart(8th, 2.29). The team ERA ranks in the top-25 nationally.
Bullpen Closing Door
Hoosier relievers have locked down leads in the late innings this season, evidenced by Indiana's 13-0 record when leading after six innings and 14-0 mark when on top with seven frames in the books.
HOT CORNER ON A HOT STREAK
IU third baseman Dustin DeMuthis swinging a hot stick lately, carrying a 14-game hitting streak into the week. The stretch is witness to a .436 average with nine RBI and a slugging percentage of .709 powered by eight extra-base hits. In addition, DeMuth has reached base successfully in 22 consecutive contests.
BASE PATH THIEVERY
Casey Rodrigue broke loose during IU's road series victory at Jacksonville, stealing five bases in as many attempts; including a 3-steal day in game two. It marked the first Hoosier to swipe three bags in a game since Micah Johnson did so vs. Evansville on March 27, 2011. The Louisiana native led all of NJCAA D-II and D-III with 68 stolen bases for LSU-Eunice in 2013. For the season, Rodrigue ranks fourth in the Big Ten with10 steals.
