Baseball Falls in Rain Shortened Game by 4-3 Score

April 3, 2014

Ball State’s baseball team suffered a 4-3 loss at Northern Kentucky in a game shortened to seven innings due to rain in the eighth inning.

The Cardinals fell to 19-10 with the loss, while the Norse improved to 8-18 with the victory.

Ball State scored first and took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first when Sean Godfrey hit his fifth home run of the season – a solo shot to center field.

Northern Kentucky rallied for two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but Ball State tied the game in the fifth with a single run.  The Cardinals scored after Cole Griesinger singled with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error by NKU.  Alex Call followed that up with a double down the left field line and the game was knotted at 2-2.

As the game entered the seventh inning all tied, Ball State rallied for one run in the top half to take a 3-2 lead.  Alex Maloney led the inning off with a single through the left side of the infield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Tidaback.  With a runner on second, Griesinger continued his day with a single up the middle to score Maloney and give Ball State the 3-2 advantage.

But Northern Kentucky managed two runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead in the contest.  Despite Ball State’s ability to tie the game in the eighth, the lightning delay and eventual cancellation of the game reverts the game back to the seventh inning and NKU tallied the win.

Griesinger ended the day with a 2-for-3 performance, one run-batted-in and one run scored.  Call managed to go 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI.  Godfrey was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored, while Maloney was 1-for-3 with a run scored.  Call, Godfrey and Caleb Stayton each tallied doubles for the Cardinals in the contest.

Chris Lovejoy started on the mound for the Cardinals and pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out two.  Jacob Brewer, who took the loss to fall to 2-1 on the season, pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.  T.J. Weir pitched the final third of the seventh to finish the pitching for the Cardinals.

Ball State will return to Mid-American Conference action Friday through Sunday at home vs. Eastern Michigan.  First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday’s games are slated to begin at 1 p.m.  The Cardinals enter the weekend with a 4-1 record in MAC play.
