LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite cold temperatures in the Midwest area, Butler played a doubleheader on Saturday with a single game vs. Xavier followed by a single contest vs. No. 10 Louisville. The Musketeers defeated BU 9-3 while the nationally-ranked Cardinals recorded a 15-1 win.
Game one was decided in the bottom of the fifth inning as Xavier dropped seven runs in a 9-3 win. The Bulldogs scored two in the second and added one in the third, but seven runs off seven hits drastically changed the momentum of the game as Xavier notched the victory.
The hit total was fairly even as Xavier registered 11 in the win with Butler close behind with nine. Quincy Quintero, Ryan Wojciechowski and Marco Caponi led the team with two hits each. Caponi, Nick Bartolone and Chris Maranto all added one RBI.
Jeff Schank and Gunner Johnson split time on the hill for BU with Schank taking the loss. Schank tossed 4.1 innings with two strikeouts and Johnson finished off the final 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Game two was all Louisville as the nationally-ranked Cardinals recorded a 15-1 victory. A 9-0 lead was established after five full innings, but Butler would break the shutout with a single run in the top of the sixth. A five run bottom of the sixth inning put the game out of reach as Louisville improved to 20-6 overall.
Kyle Allen moved to .500 on the mound with the loss. He is now 3-3 on the year after striking out three in five innings of work. Danny Pobereyko and Bobby Napoleon also saw action with Pobereyko striking out three in two innings and Napoleon finishing off the game with two K's in his lone inning of work.
The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow at Bulldog Park with a single game vs. Valparaiso. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
