BALL STATE: Baseball Splits Two Games with Buffalo

March 30, 2014

Ball State's baseball team registered a 5-2 win over Buffalo in Saturday's regularly scheduled game after suffering a 14-13 11-inning loss in Friday's suspended game.

The Cardinals improved to 18-9 overall and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference with Saturday's victory.  The two teams are scheduled to complete the three-game series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.  Buffalo fell to 11-9 on the year and 3-2 in MAC action.

After battling the Bulls to a 13-13 tie through nine innings Friday, the game was suspended due to darkness and completed Saturday prior to the second game of the series.

The two teams were held scoreless in the 10th inning, and after the Cardinals failed to score in the top of the 11th, Buffalo managed the winning run on a pair of singles and a run scoring double.

Zach Plesac suffered the loss in the suspended contest after pitching three innings over the two-day game and allowing five hits, two earned runs and striking out five.

Ryan Spaulding and Sean Kennedy led the Cardinals with three hits apiece with Spaulding hitting his second home run of the season and Kennedy recording his first triple of the year.  Alex Maloney was 2-for-5 at the plate and led Ball State with three runs-batted-in, while Spaulding and Jarrett Rindfleish tallied two RBI apiece.

In Saturday's 5-2 win, Ball State's Scott Baker pitched a complete game, allowing only two earned runs and striking out nine to improve to 4-2 on the season.  Baker allowed only four hits in the contest, including only one extra base hit, plus walked only two in the winning performance.

The Cardinals got on the board first with two runs in the top of the third, but Buffalo immediately responded with two in its half of the third.  Kennedy started the Ball State rally with a no out single up the middle, and T.J. Weir followed with a double down the right field line, but Kennedy was thrown out at the plate.  Maloney followed with a single to score Weir, and a groundout by Spaulding later scored Maloney to give Ball State the 2-0 lead.

After the Bulls tied the game at 2-2, the Cardinals managed two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.

Caleb Stayton managed a single up the middle with one out in the fourth and Kennedy followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs.  Weir managed his second double of the game to left center and scored both Kennedy and Stayton to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.

Ball State added an insurance run in the ninth when Kennedy walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a Buffalo error.

Weir was 2-for-4 in the game with two runs-batted-in and the pair of doubles.  Maloney was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Alex Call was 2-for-5 in the contest.  Kennedy was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, and Stayton was 1-for-4 with one run scored.
