DON'T PANIC YET IU BASKETBALL FANS

March 25, 2014

The Indiana basketball program made headlines in the past 48 hours with five players making decisions to leave.  As expected Noah Vonleh has decided to enter the NBA draft.  Jeremy Hollowell and Austin Etherington (scholarship players) will transfer and walk-ons Jonny Marlin and Joe Fagen will also move on.

 NOAH VONLEH

Basketball fans are now asking why?  Before everyone panics, keep everything in perspective.  We all knew Vonleh was a one-and-done. Yes that leaves a big hole at the forward position, but the coaching staff has been recruiting that position anticipating Vonleh leaving. As for Etherington and Hollowell, these departures won’t be as big of a deal.  Etherington isn’t the answer because of his lack of athleticism. Etherington’s biggest contribution was getting Cody Zeller and Yogi Ferrell to come to Indiana.

Hollowell would never pan out because of his attitude.  Hollowell said in a prepared statement he needed a “fresh start”.  Funny, so did IU basketball fans.  Watching Hollowell play hard sometimes and then take the rest of the game off was getting old.

The picture for Tom Crean doesn’t look good from the recruiting classes of 2011, 12 and 13.  Eight players are gone; three to the NBA and five transfers.  So now what?  Back to recruiting and fill the holes either through high school players or find junior college players.  There are several players still uncommitted in the 2014 class including Center Myles Turner (6-11 225), Forward Josh Cunningham (6-7 195) and Forward Andre Adams (6-9 205). Now getting them to Indiana is a different story.

A couple of things we do know….IU will have three good freshmen coming in next season including two guards who can shoot.  There is a good core to build around including Yogi Ferrell, Stanford Robinson and Troy Williams.  So don’t panic yet Indiana fans.
