Mastodons Fall In Series Finale To Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. - A six-run third inning was not enough for the IPFW baseball team to take the third game of its series at Eastern Illinois as the Mastodons fell 15-8.
Greg Kaiser led IPFW (5-15 overall) with three RBI on the day while going 2-4 at the plate. Evan VanSumeren and Kevin Wirth both collected a pair of hits as VanSumeren scored two runs while Wirth drove in a pair and scored a run. Kristian Gayday also scored two runs in the game.
Kevin Kimball took the loss for the 'Dons in relief, dropping his record to 2-3 on the season.
With one out in the first inning, VanSumeren singled, and eventually scored on a Panther wild pitch.
EIU tied the game in the second on a sacrifice fly with two outs.
The IPFW offense broke the game open in the third, scoring six runs in the inning. A leadoff walk by Malcolm White led to a sacrifice fly by Carter DeBoe to bring home the first run. With two outs, Wirth drove in a pair of runs on an infield single. Kaiser followed by bringing home two more runs on a double down the left field line. Kaiser rounded out the scoring, crossing the plate on a wild pitch.
The Panthers scored a run in the bottom of the third with a leadoff home run.
Eastern Illinois took the lead in the bottom of the seventh as the first five batters of the inning reached base, including a double that scored a pair of runs. With one out in the inning, the Panthers added two runs. They would add six more runs, all with two outs, including a grand slam.
The Mastodons got a run back in the eighth on a single up the middle by Kaiser, but IPFW was unable to pull any closer in its final trip to the plate.
IPFW next travels to Purdue on March 25 for a 5 p.m. game.
