Mastodons Fall to UIC in Opening Round of WBI

CHICAGO - The IPFW women's basketball season came to a close with an 84-71 loss to UIC in the opening round of the Women's Basketball Invitational. The Mastodons end their season with a 15-15 record.
Amanda Hyde scored a game-high 25 points in her final game as a Mastodon. She also grabbed eight rebounds to go along with five assists and two steals. Fellow seniors Rachel Mauk and Stefanie Mauk finished their careers with six points apiece, while Jessie Manwaring scored the final IPFW basket of the season.
Ariana Simmons earned her first career double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks while Haley Seibert added nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
The Flames opened with the game's first four points, before IPFW made a 13-4 run, to lead 13-8 six minutes in.
With the 'Dons leading by one, 26-25, UIC used an 8-3 run to take a 33-29 lead with 3:34 to play. IPFW closed out the half on a 12-2 run, as the Mastodons held the halftime lead 41-35.
The start of the second half saw UIC go on a 16-2 run, as IPFW was unable to connect on its first nine shots of the period. Simmons ended the drought at the 13:16 mark, but by then the Flames lead was nine, 54-45.
The IPFW offense was unable to cut the UIC lead down to less than eight the rest of the way, ending the season for the Mastodons.
For the game, the 'Dons connected on 23-of-70 (32.9%) of their shots, 9-of-40 (22.5%) from beyond the arc, and 16-of-18 (88.9%) at the free throw line.
Simmons became the first IPFW freshman to record a double-double since fellow South Side H.S. graduate Sydney Weinert had 14 points and 14 rebounds against Fairfield on Dec. 29, 2009. Simmons also finished the year with 44 blocks, third most by a Mastodon player in a single season.
Hyde ends her career fourth on the all-time IPFW scoring list and ninth in Summit League history with 1,676 points. She moves into third place in IPFW single-season history and fourth on the Summit League single-season scoring list with 670 points. Hyde also extended her single-season Summit League record for free throw attempts (247) and free throws made (215).
Seibert finishes the season with the second most three-pointers made in an IPFW season, 88, and the second best three-point shooting percentage of 44.9.
As a team, IPFW set new single-season records for three-point makes (271) and three-point attempts (744), which rank second and third in Summit League history, respectively. The Mastodons combined to score 2,326 points on the season, third most in program history and 13th all-time in the Summit League. The 106 blocks by the squad is second most in an IPFW season, while the 537 free throws made and 682 free throw attempts both rank fourth all-time. IPFW's free throws made rank fourth most ever in the Summit League and its 78.7 free throw percentage is second in both school and Summit League history.
