TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—Junior Yvette Alvarez pitched a complete game to earn the win in game one and hit her first career home run in game two as the Indiana State softball team (16-9) swept the Redhawks of Southeast Missouri State (5-11) to open their 2014 home schedule Wednesday at Price Field.
"The key is that we are learning how to win games," head coach Shane Bouman said. "Our pitchers threw well today, held them under three runs and in the second game when they got zero, your going to win a lot of games and that's what we are really trying to do. We moved the ball and got key hits. It was two good softball games, honestly."
In the first game of the season, the Sycamores improved to 11-0 on the season when scoring in the first inning as they plated two runs to take the early lead over the Redhawks.
With two outs, senior Morgan Allee hit a two out single up the middle and stole second base before freshman Brooke Riemenschneider singled through the right side to score Allee and advanced to second on the throw. Freshman Leah Salmon came in to pinch run for Riemenschneider at second base and then scored on a single off the bat of junior Megan Stone to give the Sycamores a 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Redhawks answered the Sycamores call as they hit back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game 2-2.
It did not take long for the Sycamores to retake the lead, however, as Alvarez hit a one out double before sophomore Abbie Malchow entered the game to pinch run for Alvarez on second base. After a pop out, sophomore Kelsey Montgomery kept her hot hitting streak going with an RBI single to left field to score Malchow and give the Sycamores a 3-2 lead.
The Sycamores never looked back as Alvarez pitched a complete game, seven innings, to earn the 3-2 Sycamores win, striking out two Redhawks batters to improve to 9-5 on the season. Allee was 2-3 with a run scored and her MVC leading 22nd stolen base while Stone was 2-2 with an RBI.
Pitching dominated the second game of the doubleheader as Sycamore pitchers Halle Humphrey and Taylor Lockwood combined to pitch seven scoreless innings as the Sycamores swept the doubleheader with a 2-0 victory in game two.
In the bottom of the second inning, Alvarez got the Sycamores on the scoreboard first as she crushed her first career home run in a Sycamore uniform over the right center field wall to give ISU a 1-0 lead.
The Sycamores then added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman Erika Crissman led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Shelby Wilson. Crissman then advanced to third on a single to second base by Montgomery. After a stolen base by Montgomery, junior Aubre Carpenter hit an RBI groundout to score Crissman and give the Sycamores a 2-0 advantage.
Indiana State never looked back as Lockwood allowed just two hits over the final five innings while striking out six, to earn the win to improve to 6-3 on the season. Alvarez finished the game 1-2 with her first career home run as a Sycamore.
The Sycamores improve to 16-9 on the season, matching their win total from last season, just 25 games into the 2014 season.
Indiana State will next host the Shockers of Wichita State on Friday in a single game at 3 p.m. at Price Field before playing a normally scheduled doubleheader Saturday, at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
