IUPUI SOFTBALL RELEASE

DAYTON, Ohio – Following a 13-day break from competition due to inclement weather throughout the Midwest, the IUPUI softball team is set to return to action this weekend when it heads to Dayton, Ohio, for the 2014 Dayton Flyers Spring Classic.

IUPUI originally was scheduled to play single games on Friday and Saturday before playing a doubleheader this Sunday in Dayton, but the weekend has already been adjusted due to field conditions.

The Jags will now begin tournament play on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. against Eastern Michigan, before closing the event with a doubleheader against Oakland and Dayton at Noon at 2:15 p.m., respectively. All games will be played at the UD Softball Stadium.

"It's been awhile since we've been able to play outside so we'll be excited to get out there and compete again," head coach Amanda Rivera said. "Early on this season we have had games where we have hit well and then ones where we have had great pitching and defense. We just need to put all of that together for three games this weekend."

The Jaguars last set of games occurred Feb. 28 through March 1 in Bowling Green, Ky., and it was a tough weekend for IUPUI going 1-3 with all three losses coming by one run. Cassie Vodde and Jocelyn Oppenhuis combined for 26.0 innings of work throughout the four games and totaled a 0.81 ERA, but five errors resulted in seven unearned runs for IUPUI opponents ultimately proving to be the difference.

Offensively, the Jaguars outhit their opponents .236 to .170, and they were led by Sarah Lawrence, who went 7-for-13 with a double and two RBI. With Lawrence's performance throughout that weekend, she upped her season average to .478, which ranks second in The Summit League.

Through 15 games, a pair of freshmen in Maggie Good and Roni Patterson have been IUPUI's leading run producers driving in 10 and 9 runs, respectively. Patterson is also second on the team in hitting with a .375 average.
