ISU PRESS RELEASE
ST. LOUIS – Indiana State, which clinched a share of its third Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball regular-season title, has earned the No. 1 seed in the MVC Tournament. Indiana State and Wichita State both finished with identical 14-4 league records, but the Sycamores earned the top seed as a result of the league's tiebreaking procedures.
Indiana State enters next week's championship on a six-game winning streak. The preseason MVC favorite Sycamores secured the No. 1 seed in Saturday’s 85-72 win at Northern Iowa, it’s first since 2005-06. It marked the fourth regular season conference championship in program history (one Gateway Conference and three MVC) as ISU has never captured a tournament title.
ISU faces the winner of the No. 8 Loyola and No. 9 Bradley game at 1:05 p.m. ET on Friday, March 14 at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
Wichita State (14-4 MVC) and UNI (13-5 MVC) are the second and third seeds, respectively. Evansville (10-8 MVC) ended the regular-season on an eight-game winning streak and will be the fourth seed, while Drake (9-9 MVC) takes the No. 5 seed.
This year's tournament - the seventh neutral-site event in the conference's history - begins on Thursday, March 13. The top seed has won the conference tournament in 16 of 28 seasons and a team that has won or shared the regular-season title has gone on to win the tournament title 18 times. Top seeds have four runner-up finishes. Teams seeded No. 2 have won the tournament four times and finished as the runner-up 11 times.
The tournament, which features nine games over four days, culminates on Sunday, March 16, with a nationally televised game on FS Midwest as part of the MVC Television Network at 3:00 p.m. EST. Both semifinals will also air on the MVC Television Network at 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. EST on Saturday, March 15.
The opening round games on Thursday evening, as well as the four quarterfinal games on Friday will be shown live online, free of charge, as part of the Valley's video-streaming package on the league's website. Log on to www.mvc-sports.com for more details.
In addition, Indiana State fans will be able to listen to a live broadcast on 98.5 WIBQ FM (also streaming online).
Missouri State has won the most MVC Tournament titles, nine, of any Valley school, its last coming in 2006. Drake has claimed five tournament titles. Illinois State won the league's first tournament title in 1983. Last season, top-seeded Wichita State won its first-ever MVC Tournament, as the Shockers look to become back-to-back champions.
