BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The IUPUI softball team hit a rough patch on day two of the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic on Saturday (Mar. 1) dropping back-to-back one-run games at Buchanon Park. Despite a six-inning no-hitter from sophomore Cassie Vodde, the Jaguars dropped a 1-0 decision to Wright State before turning around and falling 3-2 to Northern Iowa.
Wright State 1, IUPUI 0
Coming off her first career shutout, Vodde was equally brilliant on Saturday, tossing a no-hitter against the Raiders. However, WSU (1-7) plated an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth and got a shutout from starter Montana Wear.
Wright State (1-7) took the lead in fourth when designated player Libby Pfeffer led off with a walk and moved up on a ground out. After an IUPUI error allowed a pinch runner to advance to third, Taylor Knore lofted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 1-0.
IUPUI (6-9) threatened in the top of the fifth, beginning with Morgan Schlobohm and Alyssa Neff reaching on back-to-back singles. After a strikeout, Sarah Lawrence loaded the bases with one out by stroking a single to left. However, Wear wiggled off the hook with a strikeout and a pop out in foul ground to keep the Raiders in front. The Jags had a two-out rally go by the boards in their final at-bat after Lawrence and Ali Mosier put up back-to-back hits. Wear finished the job by getting Roni Patterson to pop harmlessly to shortstop to end the game.
IUPUI finished with eight hits, but stranded 10 runners in the loss. Lawerence and Angela Bartucci both went 2-for-3 in the loss.
Wear (1-4) fanned eight and walked two in the win while Vodde walked two in the no-hit defeat.
Northern Iowa 3, IUPUI 2
In game two, IUPUI struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, but UNI (11-5) scored the decisive three runs in the top of the fifth inning against senior Jocelyn Oppenhuis.
Schlobohm started the two-run third with a bunt hit and then moved to second on Neff's sacrifice bunt. Mosier followed with an RBI double to left and Lawrence added a run scoring single, making it 2-0. UNI starter Chelsea Ross (5-2) got Lindsey Richards to fly out to end the inning.
Oppenhuis had retired seven straight until the Panthers roughed her up in the fifth. Samantha Olson started the inning with a leadoff single and scored on Anna Varriano's double to left. Oppenhuis got the next two outs without incident, but Caitlin Wnek tied the score with a two-out double. Gina Brown followed with a go-ahead single, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double.
IUPUI never seriously threatened in its final three at-bats of the afternoon.
Ross struck out six and walked two in the complete game win while Oppenhuis (2-5) fanned five and walked one in defeat. Both Brown and Varriano had two hits each in the win.
Sunday's game scheduled against tournament host Western Kentucky has been canceled due to inclement weather in the forecast.
