BUTLER: Baseball Falls 6-2 at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Butler baseball team took a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough as Samford scored five unanswered runs to pull out a 6-2 victory. Two extra base hits put Butler on the scoreboard early. Samford tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth and took control of the game with a two run sixth, followed by a two-run seventh inning.
Marcos Calderon led the Bulldogs with a 3-for-5 day from the plate that included an RBI triple down the right field line in the third inning. BU went on to take the lead in the fourth after an RBI double from Chris Maranto that allowed Nick Bartolone to score from first base.
Eric Stout tossed the first five innings of the game for Butler. He gave up four hits while striking out five and walking three. Only two of Stout's four runs were earned. Other Bulldogs to take the mound included Gunner Johnson, Will Schierholz and Kyle Allen.
Johnson was on-point as he shut down Samford in his one inning of work. Two of the three outs in the inning came off Johnson strikeouts. Kyle Allen was also in the zone for Butler while on the mound as he shutout the home team for two innings while striking out four batters.
Samford was able to add insurance runs against Scheirholz who was unable to record an out while on the hill. Scheirholz gave up two earned runs and walked a batter before he was replaced in the lineup.
Ledford recorded his second win on the season for Samford. He struck out 12 batters in seven innings of action. Belcher retired two batters, but it was Gracia who earned the save. He struck out three batters in 1.1 innings while limiting Butler to just one hit.
The Bulldogs will return to action with an early 10:30 game vs. Purdue tomorrow morning. They will end the weekend with another game at Samford on Sunday.
