LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - An early three run lead was not enough for the IPFW baseball team as it fell to UIC 14-6, dropping the Mastodons to 2-6 on the season.
Tyler Shepherd and Brandon Soat each had three hits and scored a pair of runs on the day for IPFW. Shepherd also stole his fifth base of the season in the seventh inning. Shane Trevino drove in three runs and collected two hits while Carter DeBoe had two RBI in the game.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. IPFW scored when Soat singled through the left side of the infield with two outs, scoring Trevino.
After the Flames scored a run in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly, IPFW answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kristian Gayday drove the first pitch of the inning over the center field wall for his second home run of the season. One out later, back-to-back singles by Shepherd and Soat allowed Caleb Fenimore to score from third on a ground out by DeBoe. Trevino followed with a double to right center, scoring Shepherd and Soat to give the 'Dons a 5-2 lead.
UIC scored twice in the third inning on a bunt single and a double.
In the seventh, the Flames scored a run with two outs to tie the game on an IPFW error. The Mastodons regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as DeBoe singled with two outs, to score Shepherd.
IPFW was unable to hold onto the lead in the eighth as UIC connected on a grand slam with two outs. The Flames added five more runs in the ninth after the 'Dons walked three of the first four batters in the inning.
Brandon Pease started on the mound for the Mastodons, taking a no decision, lasting three innings. He surrendered four runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out three UIC batters. Connor Lawhead took the loss in relief for IPFW, dropping his record to 0-2 on the season.
IPFW will play a pair of games on March 1, taking on Missouri at 11 a.m. (EST) and then UALR immediately following.
