ISU SOFTBALL RELEASE

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—The Indiana State Softball team (7-3) improved its win streak to six games after defeating Wright State (0-6) 4-3 and IUPUI (6-7) 3-0 in their first two games of the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic Friday in Bowling Green, Ky.

“It was a game of fastpitch softball where the pitchers controlled the game and we did enough offensively to score runs to win games. And that’s what we want to do, we want to pitch, play defense and find a way to scrap out a couple runs. When you can win games when you’re not playing really, really well, its good. Good day to get two and back at it tomorrow.

Game One

The Sycamores jumped out to an early lead and rallied in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Raiders of Wright State 4-3 in the first game of the day.

Freshman Erika Crissman led off the game with a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Rylee Holland.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Sycamores struck again to extend their lead to 2-0. Senior Morgan Allee led off the inning with a bunt single before senior Shelby Wilson singled through the right side to advance Allee to third. Wilson advanced to second on the throw. Freshman Brooke Riemenschneider kept things going with an RBI single through the right side to score Allee.

The Raiders offense came to life in the bottom of the sixth with two singles and two doubles to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead over the Sycamores.

Freshman Kassie Brown led off the top of the seventh with a single through the left side before Crissman singled to center field. Both runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Holland with one out. Allee then singled to first base to score Brown. Crissman then scored on a wild pitch to give the Sycamores a 4-3 advantage.

Junior Yvette Alvarez retired the Radiders in order in the bottom of the 7th to earn her first save and give the Sycamores the 4-3 victory. Crissman finished the game 3-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored.

Game Two

In the second game of the day, the Sycamores scored first for the eighth time in 10 games this season as they never trailed an route to a 3-2 victory over the Jaguars of IUPUI.

The Sycamores got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Allee reached on a dropped fly ball and advanced to second. Wilson then reached on an error by the second baseman to score Allee. Riemenschneider then singled to the pitcher to score Wilson and give the Sycamores a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Sycamores got on the board again as junior Megan Stone reached on an error by the first baseman to lead off the inning. Sophomore Kelsey Montgomery then hit a bunt single to the pitcher to advance Stone to third before Montgomery stole second base. Crissman then hit an RBI groundout to score Stone and give the Sycamores a 3-0 advantage over the Jaguars.

Pitching and defense then took over as neither team was able to push across any runs until the top of the sixth inning when IUPUI hit a solo home run to lead off the inning to make it 3-1.

The Jaguars added on one more in the top of the 7th but could get no closer as the Sycamores went on to win their second game of the day 3-2.

Montgomery finished the game 2-2 with a stolen base while Alvarez pitched a complete game, allowing two runs with three strikeouts.

The Sycamores will return to action Saturday when they play Green Bay and host Western Kentucky.
