Sycamores Head To Eastern Illinois and Notre Dame For Last Chance Meets

February 21, 2014

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State Track and Field teams will be heading to two meets this weekend, as they will attempt to get in one last good performance before next weeks MVC championships.

“This weekend is all about final preparations for the conference meet and in a few cases, we have some athletes still trying to make the conference team,” said Men’s Head Coach John McNichols. “It’ll be in their best interest to improve their performance, as we finalize the lineup next week.”

The Eastern Illinois Friday Night Classic will start at around 2 p.m. (CT) with the women’s weight throw. The track events will begin at 3 p.m. (CT) with the women’s 5,000 meter run. The meet will then follow a rolling schedule until the 1,000 meter run concludes the meet at approximately 8:45 p.m. (CT).

“our first priority this weekend is prepping for conference, but we are also getting a great opportunity to compete on a good track at Notre Dame,” said Women’s Head Coach Angela Martin. “Katie Wise will get one more chance to run the 60 before conference, where she’ll have more than one race. Carmelia will also have a great chance to compete well in the triple jump, as well as the 4 x 4 relay team.”

The Alex Wilson Invitational will begin Saturday with the Women’s Weight Throw, Men’s Long Jump, and Women’s Pole Vault beginning at 11:00 p.m. (ET). The track events will begin with the women’s 60 meter hurdle trials at 11:00 a.m. (ET) and the action will conclude with the men’s 4 x 400 meter relay at 4:15 p.m. (ET).

“There are going to be some great races at Notre Dame; including out 4 x 4 team, who I believe are about to run their fastest time of the year,” said McNichols. “Ironically, things have worked out to where Greggmar Swift will race the hurdler from Southern California that overtook him for the top spot in the nation last week. Also, there will be the national champion from two years ago, who now competes for Puma. There will be some great hurdling ahead for our guys this weekend.”

These meets will likely determine the final 32 athlete rosters for next weekend’s Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships, hosted by the University of Northern Iowa.
