AMES, Iowa - Matthew McClintock capped an impressive day for himself by breaking the school record in the 5,000-meter run at the Iowa State Classic. Earlier in the day, McClintock was named All-Academic by the USTFCCCA for the 2013 cross country season.

McClintock competed in the 5k for the first time in the 2014 season and had to do so in the fastest collegiate race of the year. The sophomore ran a time of 13:56.41 to become the first individual in school history to break the 14-minute barrier and broke Donnie Fellows' previous school record of 14:04.00 from 2002. Seven of the county's top-10 times came from Friday night's race, including McClintock's, which ranks 10th. The Athens, Maine, native's time earned him a seventh-place finish and sixth among collegians.

McClintock broke his previous personal record by 22.54 seconds en route to the school record. His performance comes less than a week after running the school's second-fastest 3,000-meter time with a mark of 8:06.79 at the Meyo Invite in South Bend, Ind. That time is 0.40 of a second behind Fellows' 3k program standard.

The sophomore is the third Boilermaker to break a program record this year, as he joins Dani Bunch and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi. Bunch broke the women's shot put and weight throw records numerous times this year, while Enekwechi owns the men's weight throw mark.

McClintock joins an elite club of five Boilermakers on the current roster that own Purdue indoor school records, and one more than owns an outdoor mark. Dan Porter broke the Purdue mile record last year with a time of 4:05.91, while Vanessa McLeod owns the 800m record with a time of 2:05.21. Andre' Peart owns the school record in the 400m hurdles, an outdoor event.

Most of McClintock's teammates will be competing on Saturday in the Fred Wilt Invitational, the final home meet for the Boilermakers. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. ET inside Lambert Fieldhouse.
