Fontaine Leads All Scorers In WBB's Loss At Toledo

January 24, 2014

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Ball State University women's basketball team (8-9, 3-3 MAC) fell 73-61 to Mid-American Conference West Division foe Toledo (8-9, 3-3 MAC) Thursday night in Savage Arena.

Despite the loss Ball State had four players score in double figures with sophomore forward Nathalie Fontaine leading all players with 17 points.  Senior guard Brandy Woody had 15 points and added seven rebounds.  Junior guard Brittany Carter ended the night with a 13- point performance and classmate guard Shelbie Justice finished with 10.

Ball State trailed Toledo the entire second half and the Cardinals were held to a 40.4 shooting percentage, while the Rockets shot 42.4 percent for the contest.  Toledo out-rebounded Ball State 40-to-29.

At the 6:42 mark in the second half Toledo led by as many as 16 (55-39), the Cardinals in their last efforts to win the game, put together a 13-5 run over a four minute span to come within eight (60-52) which came off of a layup from Woody.  That was as close as the Cardinals would get as the Rockets would hit their free throws down the stretch to seal Toledo’s victory.

The Cardinals started the game strong winning the opening tip and scoring off of a layup from senior forward Katie Murphy to put Ball State up 2-0 over Toledo.

The Rockets answered back quickly eventually putting together a 9-point edge over the Cardinals (13-4) at the 13:24 mark.  Carter and Justice sparked a 4-0 run for Ball State to cut Toledo's lead to five (13-8) with eight minutes shaved off the clock but the Rockets continued to prevail eventually building a 35-21 halftime cushion over the Cardinals.

The Ball State women's basketball team will continue MAC action at home in a cross divisional game when it hosts to Buffalo Sunday, for a 1 p.m. tipoff at Worthen Arena.
