VERMILLION, S.D. - Seeking its first Summit League win of the year, the IUPUI basketball team will head west to take on South Dakota (6-9, 1-0 Summit) inside the DakotaDome (10,000) on Thursday (Jan. 16) night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Eastern (7 Central) and the game can be heard in Central Indiana on WNDE 1260 AM and worldwide on the free iHeartRadio app available on smartphones as Will Flemming (pxp) is on the call.
South Dakota is riding a three-game winning streak, including a Summit League opening 59-54 win over Denver last Saturday.
Meanwhile, IUPUI lost back-to-back games to South Dakota State and North Dakota State, the latter being an 87-64 loss to the Bison inside the Jungle last Saturday. IUPUI (5-14, 0-2 Summit) trailed the league's preseason favorite by four at the break and by two early in the second half, but saw the Bison run away for a 23-point win. NDSU senior TrayVonn Wright led the way with a career-high 24 points as the Bison hit 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) threes and 50.8 percent overall.
Donovan Gibbs and Marcellus Barksdale paced IUPUI with 14 points each and senior center Mitch Patton scored in double-digits for the sixth straight game with 11 points and six boards in 29 minutes.
IUPUI has been efficient offensively in Summit League play, shooting better than 48 percent overall and 82.4 percent at the foul line. However, defense has been a struggle as the Jaguars have allowed their first two foes to shoot a combined 51.3 percent overall and average 86.5 points per game. North Dakota State overpowered the Jaguars inside, outrebounding IUPUI 38-26 and outscoring the hosts 42-22 in the paint. IUPUI has also struggled to force turnovers in league play, getting just 12 miscues the past two games and converting them into just five points total.
IUPUI is 1-3 all-time against South Dakota and lost the last two meetings in the series with the Coyotes. The Jaguars have never won inside the DakotaDome including an 88-68 loss last season. In the most recent meeting, USD won 87-69 inside The Jungle on Feb. 28, 2013, despite a 24-point effort from Patton.
Trevor Gruis had 26 points, six boards and five assists to lead four Coyotes in that win, while Casey Kasperbauer chipped in 13 points. This year's USD squad is led by Gruis (12.5 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 58.7 FG%) and junior guard Brandon Bos (13.1 ppg ,22 3's). Gruis had 19 points and 10 boards in the win over Denver while Bos added 15 points and a pair of treys.
North Texas-transfer Trey Norris has taken over the USD point guard position, averaging 8.9 points, 5.1 assists and 1.5 steals per ballgame. USD is 5-1 on its home floor this season.
