INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 19 UIndy men's basketball team (10-1, 2-1 GLVC) notched a 85-59 win against cross-division-foe Rockhurst (4-7, 0-4) Thursday night in Nicoson Hall. The highlight came late in the first half when senior Reece Cheatham became the 36th student-athlete in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Cheatham, who amassed 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting, drained back-to-back threes just prior to the final media timeout of the first half to reach quadruple digits for his career. His sharp shooting fueled a 15-5 run that gave the Hounds control.
UIndy pushed the margin to 16 at the break after shooting a lofty 62 percent from the floor while out-scoring the Hawks 15-0 in fast break points. Cheatham compiled 13 points as the only player in double figures at the half.
It took all of 10 seconds for the Hounds to score in the second half, as the very first play of the period came on an alley-oop from Cheatham to Brennan McElroy. The deficit reached 21 points shortly thereafter on a three-point play by Leland Brown.
Rockhurst (4-7, 0-4 GLVC) picked up the defense intensity for that point and eventually cut the lead to 10 midway through the half, but the Hawks never got it to single digits to remain winless in conference play.
Three other Hounds joined Cheatham in double figures, with Brown matching his classmate's total of 17 points while adding six rebounds and seven assists. Senior Jared Grady scored all 15 of his points in the second half, and McElroy added a season-high 14 points to go with seven boards.
The Hounds remain home to host another GLVC West team in William Jewell Saturday. Tip time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. ET.
